Lauren Mavromati Bourke is Cypriot-Australian multidisciplinary textile artist based on unceded Wurundjeri Country in Naarm/Melbourne. Their practice is the product of generational handicrafts, reimagining traditional textiles and their therapeutic nature through decolonial, queer, and nonbinary lens. Their research-based practice explores the entangled themes of colonialism, borders, gender, intergenerational trauma and collective memory. Frequently, Lauren explores these themes through motifs of water and the parallel realities between humans and marine creatures, unravelling the binaries of colonialism, nationalism, and cisheteronormativity.

Currently, Lauren is focused on bordered environments, particularly examining how the decommonisation of water through borders and nationalism shapes the realities of all living beings. This exploration is contextualised by the connections and disconnections between Australia and Cyprus.

Based on unceded Wurundjeri Country in Naarm/Melbourne.
